The following is but a representative list of paintings I have sold in the last 15 years. I will enlarge this gallery when time permits.
Like most artists when they begin their career my paintings were representational at first. This is largely because beginning artists tend to imitate photos with local colors faithfully reproduced. If they survive the criticisms of friends and well-wishers, most move on to other styles that are more beautiful in my view. I compare representational painting to prose and abstract painting to poems.
I can't tell you how many times I have talked to buyers and gallery onlookers who comment "I wish I could paint like that." I reply "You can." Their history is the same. Children have a natural desire to paint or draw and they have a wonderful sense of design too. As they grow older their drawings become more representational at the urging of teachers and parents. However, when about 12 or 13 years of age, a painting presented with great pride of accomplishment to their teacher meets with "I like it but could'nt you do this a little more realistic?" Unfortunately, most schools do not have professional art teachers. Their classroom teacher knows little about art and cannot teach techniques that can bring the child to another stage of development. A double whammy occurs when the child is met with the same advice (i.e.criticism) at home. The criticism is taken hard to the extent that they don't paint again, at least not until later in life. After all they believe they have no talent. Workshops are wonderful places to see these very students, now grown up, translate their latent desires into works of art. Fulfillment at last. I know, I was one of them.
