A poplar grove along the river banks of any river in Western Canada is a sight to see in the fall because of their vivid yellow colors contrasting with mauve shadows. This semi-abstract painting is an attempt to capture this yellow light and the deep shadows along a steep river bank of the South Saskatchewan River. This river, which runs through Saskatoon (the City of Bridges), arises far to the West in the Rocky Mountains, joins the North Saskatchewan River east of Prince Albert before making its way to James Bay. As the last Continental Ice Sheet retreated some 12,000 years ago, the water from melting ice created spillways carving out steep river valleys like the one depicted in this painting. |
