This tableau of late summer flowers in a crystal vase is very typical of the flower paintings I do.
I like the medley look of flower arrangements - there are many beautiful flowers in my garden to choose from. The public and private gardens are also good sources for ideas. Plants don't get into the ground until late May up here in Saskatoon because of possible frost, but growth is quick because summer days are very long. Smooth illustration board is used to obtain vivid and saturated colors. No greyed color here! The colors are made that much more bright and colorful by the dark purple background that frames the flowers.Unlike most of my paintings, there is no preliminary sketch - I just let the paint fly, usually with a 2-inch brush. I used a model for the vase though - there are so many around the house to choose from and a crystal vase seemed best for this arrangment. |
