I have always been fascinated with flowers, something I inherited from my father who was a gardener par excellence. In fact, my name la fleur means the flower in French. You may not know that most Canadians of French origin came from northern France where a few hundred years ago they spoke a Nordic language, now disappeared. When this area was annexed and influenced by central France the names of those inhabitants were changed to French to reflect what they did, how they looked, what they were interested in, etc. Maybe there is something about this gene thing after all - but let my paintings speak for themselves!
Flowers are a virtual feast for the eyes of colorists - they offer contrasts in value, color, texture, shape, line, size and direction. The colors can range from the subtle hues of the orchid to the dark and saturated colors of most dahlias. My other favorite flowers are roses, tulips, peonies and sunflowers as well as wildflowers. Masses of flowers such as the bright white and pink blooms of orchards are great to paint (and are fragrant as well). In still lifes, I like to paint flowers with brilliant and bright colors in Japanese or Chinese vases of intricate design.
